Year12-MATH-2-4-3 Earth geometry

In the QLD Year 12 General Mathematics syllabus, Unit 3 is titled “Bivariate data, sequences and change, and Earth geometry“. This unit covers data analysis (bivariate and time series), mathematical sequences (arithmetic and geometric), and the spatial measurement of the globe.

Earth Geometry and Time Zones

This topic applies spherical geometry to the Earth to calculate distances and determine time differences.

  • Positioning: Students use latitude (north-south) and longitude (east-west) in degrees and minutes to locate positions relative to the Equator and Prime Meridian.
  • Spherical Concepts: Calculations involve great circles (circles that share the Earth’s center, such as the Equator or meridians) and small circles (parallels of latitude other than the Equator).
  • Distance Calculations:
    • Along a Meridian (Great Circle): D=111.2×angular distancecap D equals 111.2 cross angular distance.
    • Along a Parallel of Latitude (Small Circle): D=111.2cos(θ)×angular distancecap D equals 111.2 cosine open paren theta close paren cross angular distance, where 𝜃 is the latitude.
  • Time Zones: Calculations are based on longitude differences, where 15 15^{\circ } equals 1 hour of time difference.

Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences

This section focuses on patterns of growth and decay using recursion and general rules.

  • Arithmetic Sequences: These have a common difference (𝑑).
    • Recursive Rule: tn+1=tn+dt sub n plus 1 end-sub equals t sub n plus d.
    • General Rule (nthn raised to the t h powerterm): tn=a+(n1)dt sub n equals a plus open paren n minus 1 close paren d, where 𝑎 is the first term.
  • Geometric Sequences: These involve a common ratio (𝑟), used to model exponential growth or decay (e.g., population growth or reducing-balance depreciation).
    • Recursive Rule: tn+1=r×tnt sub n plus 1 end-sub equals r cross t sub n.
    • General Rule (nthn raised to the t h powerterm): tn=a×rn1t sub n equals a cross r raised to the n minus 1 power.

一般則(n番目の項):tn=a+(n1)dt_{n}=a+(n-1)daa)は最初の項です。

再帰的規則:tn+1=r×tnt_{n+1}=r\times t_{n}
一般則(nn番目の項):tn=a×rn1t_{n}=a\times r^{n-1}
